Matthias Walz

Actually, Matthias Walz is really nice. But when something upsets him, he can get pretty angry. And there are plenty of things that upset him—especially in politics. As the star of “Fastnacht in Franken”—the highest-rated show on all of Germany’s regional public television channels—Matthias Walz regularly gives the assembled political elite a piece of his mind. The result is collective gasping: among the politicians, because they have to put on a brave face; and among the rest of the audience, because they’re nearly falling off their chairs with laughter.
Lounging casually at the piano, the man in the green suit musically distills his ingenious trains of thought and makes his audience laugh—and sometimes even think—with wit, charm, and intelligence. No human abyss is foreign to him, no truth too direct. His subtle powers of observation and sharp-tongued eloquence can only be rooted in his solid education—a long, self-taught apprenticeship in pub culture, lovingly complemented by college studies in computer science, physics, and linguistics.
Matthias Walz is, then, a wanderer between worlds. And an entertainer with conviction. That’s why it’s quite possible that, for some, laughter might occasionally get stuck in their throats. Because Matthias Walz wants to be like St. Nicholas: You look forward to his arrival, but you’re always a little afraid of what might be in store for you. But to put your mind at ease: Matthias Walz feels exactly the same way about you. And you’re not really a bad person, are you?
