Mayerling looks behind the glittering facade of the Danube Monarchy. Crown Prince Rudolf stands at the center of this vast cast of characters. Desperately hungry for love, crushed by expectations, and entangled in intrigues, the heir to the throne ends up ill and obsessed with death. His delusion finds a kindred spirit in 17-year-old Mary Vetsera, who has succumbed to him with absolute devotion. At the Mayerling hunting lodge, Rudolf ultimately shoots first his seductive lover and then himself. Thanks to Kenneth MacMillan’s narrative artistry, the ballet’s historically documented backdrop unfolds on stage as a chronicle of destruction. His scenes bring to life the stiff and corrupt atmosphere at court as well as Rudolf’s obsession. The captivating pas de deux, in particular, demand everything—both mentally and physically—from the dancer in the lead role.
