Mayerling

Mayerling takes a look behind the glittering façade of the Danube monarchy. Crown Prince Rudolf is at the center of the large cast of characters. Desperate for love, overwhelmed by expectations and embroiled in intrigue, the heir to the throne ends up sick and obsessed with death. His madness finds favor with 17-year-old Mary Vetsera, who succumbs to him in absolute devotion. At the Mayerling hunting lodge, Rudolf finally shoots first his seductive lover and then himself. Thanks to Kenneth MacMillan's storytelling skills, the historically authenticated background to the ballet unfolds on stage as a chronicle of destruction. His scenes allow the stiff and depraved atmosphere at court and Rudolf's obsession to be felt. The captivating pas de deux in particular demand everything from the dancer in the leading role, both mentally and physically.
