In her stories, written over the course of three decades, the Indian
author Banu Mushtaq celebrates the small, everyday acts of female resistance. The backdrop is a country—India—riddled with classism and corruption. There we meet
Aashraf, who is abandoned by her husband because she gives birth only to daughters; Jamila, whose brother tries to cheat her out of her inheritance in the name of religion; and Akhila, whose husband can barely look her in the eye but jumps around like a young calf whenever he sees his mother. They are all united in their grief and anger. And they laugh defiantly and wittily in the faces of the powerful. Banu Mushtaq is an author, lawyer, and activist who was born in 1948 in Hassan, Karnataka, India. The short story collection *Most of the Time, the Woman Stays at Home*, translated by Katrin Binder, won the International Booker Prize in 2025 and has been published in over 15 countries.
