The Missa buccinata is a festive mass by the German composer and Regensburg cathedral conductor Christian Heiß from 2003. Heiß, who has created numerous works as a choral composer, set Pope Benedict XVI's first mass to music in 2011; this setting was the official gift from the German bishops for the Pope at the time. Heiß is considered one of the most renowned contemporary German church musicians and composers. He has been the cathedral conductor in Regensburg and artistic director of the world-famous Regensburger Domspatzen since 2019.
Unusual instrumentation characterizes the work
The Missa buccinata is a mass in the so-called "old style". Although it is musically based on Venetian polychoral music and the Baroque period, the composer adapted it to modern listening habits. Heiß chose an unusual instrumentation: he wrote the mass for mixed, four-part choir, accompanied by a brass quartet with two trumpets and two trombones.
