Am I Allowed to Pop? – Friederike Mayröcker’s Poetry in Slow Flashes

Friederike Mayröcker (1924–2021, Vienna) is considered the foremother of the German-language avant-garde, a poet whose well over one hundred books are so complex in structure and so difficult to grasp semantically that a lifetime of reading is not enough to fully unravel these texts. At the same time, however, Friederike Mayröcker’s poetic works are floating, almost weightless structures that, beyond conventional understanding, reveal themselves in an almost physical way. In doing so, Mayröcker also employs strategies familiar to us from pop music, without, however, betraying her experimental intentions. For even though she incorporates popular references into her poems and a few band names come up, it is precisely as Dietmar Dath put it much later: “The term ‘pop literature’ does not mean ‘books in which records appear.’” In the breakfast seminar, we’ll read texts from Mayröcker’s volumes *Tod durch Musen. Poetische Texte* (1966/1973), *Minimonsters Traumlexikon. Texts in Prose” (1968), and “Fantom Fan” (1971).
