Prof. Dr. Matthew Gardner in conversation with Renita Steinwand

In many countries, St. Cecilia's Day is celebrated with music on November 22. Many music societies and concert halls bear the name of the patron saint of music. This day was also Benjamin Britten's birthday - coincidence and fate come together in his hymn dedicated to her. James MacMillan also dedicated a work for a cappella choir to her. Henry Purcell's "Ode to St. Cecilia" from 1692 has larger dimensions. This festive music by the Baroque composer is one of many settings that can be traced back to an important Cecilian tradition in London since 1683. Join us for a British evening with Matthew Gardner and the music surrounding this inspiring figure.
