Minimalism Meets Mozart

KILAR “Orawa” for String Orchestra
MOZART Piano Concerto in G Major, K. 453
Nareh Arghamanyan, piano
Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Killian Farrell

Miles Davis “Tutu” meets Minimal
Wojciech Kilar’s minimalist piece “Orawa” (1986) serves as the foundation for the late-night show at Bix. Just as this piece is conceived—with recurring patterns and a sweeping arc of tension featuring many colors and ideas—so too has the jazz of the era taken shape.
2026 marks the 270th anniversary of Mozart’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, who explored many jazz styles throughout his career—from bebop to cool jazz and modern jazz, through the Flower Power movement, to funk and soul jazz.
In 1986, Davis released the LP “Tutu” with his kindred spirit, Marcus Miller. “Minimal” is also an apt term here: recurring patterns, improvisation, catchy melodies, a hypnotic groove…

Band in the Bix
Matthias Schriefl, trumpet
Libor Šíma, saxophones
Robert Kesternich, keyboards
Alexander Merzkirch, bass
Obi Jenne, drums
