Pleasures of Return

Galerie Klaus Braun is showing new paintings by Pakistani artist Naqsh Raj. She has a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts in Lahore and several years of teaching experience in the United Kingdom.

Her paintings are characterized by a very distinctive style that is marked by tension. Flowing, organic brushstrokes collide with mechanical, methodical applications of paint, layers of pigment merging together: The grid layer becomes a frame of order, the free forms stand as fragments of everyday life and personal memories, and the different "strokes" of paint applied with stencils reveal instinctive aesthetics and lifestyles.
2014 she began using single-cell stencils, but also remained true to her instinct for freedom in applying paint. The integration of stencil and gesture creates a balance between control and spontaneity, structure and intuition - two worlds in which she lives simultaneously as an artist and a mother.
