Panel discussion
Rap and rap music bring perspectives into the public discourse that are otherwise often ignored. Since its beginnings, rap has articulated protest, created visibility and called for social debate. At the same time, rap polarizes. Many lyrics work with drastic images, provoke with staged violence or sexist language.
We take a look at rap music and its development in France and Germany. How do we distinguish between artistic processing and deliberately crossing boundaries? In a society in which discourses are coming to a head, it is time to listen more closely: What role does rap play as a cultural form of protest in the democratic space? How does it make marginalized voices heard? And what responsibility do artists, the media and society have in dealing with radical forms of expression?
