From the rice paddies of China to Silicon Valley: the novel "Real Americans" (Tobias Schnettler) tells the story of three generations of a Chinese-American family and takes place in New York City on New Year's Eve 1999. Lily Chen is 22, the daughter of Chinese immigrants and an unpaid intern at a hip media company. She falls in love with Matthew - charming, privileged, heir to a pharmaceutical empire. Two worlds collide, and yet anything seems possible. 21 years later, Lily's son Nick lives with her on a remote island. When he begins to search for his father, he discovers secrets that change everything. Rachel Khong's writing has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, The Guardian, The Cut and The Paris Review, among others. In 2018, she founded "The Ruby" in San Francisco, a work and event space for female writers and non-binary artists. Rachel Khong lives in California. She is a visiting professor at Leipzig University in the summer semester of 2026.
