When the world ends on the big screen, Roland Emmerich is often behind it. The internationally acclaimed director, known for spectacular disaster films and monumental images such as in Independence Day or The Day After Tomorrow, is a guest at Schauspiel Stuttgart. In conversation with Michael Steinbrecher from SWR Kultur, the Master of Disaster gives personal insights into his work: How do you create doomsday scenarios for cinema? What drives him to make entire cities collapse and set the sky on fire? And what stories interest him today?
Following the discussion, we will be showing the SWR documentary The Master of Apocalypse about the filmmaker's life and work. The film traces Emmerich's path from film-enthusiastic student to globally successful director and sheds light on the making of his greatest productions.
