Reading in three parts
"No one can bring the insect in the amber to life."
The dramatic story of a local museum in Masuria becomes the crystallization point of the major political developments from the turn of the century to the post-war period. Siegfried Lenz's novel, first published in 1978, has a superficially traditional narrative. On reading, it proves to be a fascinating experiment with history and memory, myth and modernity. Lenz also creates a colorful panorama of Masuria as a European border landscape. Carpet weaver Zygmunt Rogalla has immortalized this homeland in a museum with unwavering dedication. After the war, flight and a new start in the West, he destroys his own work. Severely injured on his sickbed, he justifies his actions and tells his life story. His childhood friend Conny is a central antagonist. And "Heimat" is repeatedly instrumentalized politically.
Rudolf Guckelsberger, speaker and presenter at SWR, performs his own literary programs and is known for his numerous audio book recordings. On three evenings at the HdH BW, he will read from Siegfried Lenz's great Masuria novel.
