Concert program 2025
Jeremias Burk, cello
Christoph Wagner, conductor
The program features two masterpieces from the late Romantic period. The program opens with Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor op. 104, masterfully interpreted by Jeremias Burk (Karlsruhe University of Music). Composed during Dvořák's time in the USA, the work combines Bohemian melodicism with powerful orchestral treatment. Despite initial skepticism towards the cello as a solo instrument, Dvořák created one of the most important works in the genre. This is followed by Johannes Brahms' 4th Symphony in E minor op. 98, his last symphonic work. In it, Brahms combines formal rigor with deeply felt expressivity. The symphony captivates with its dramatic expression and dense motivic development, which is carried by melodic beauty and rhythmic energy.
