Sebastião Salgado: Amazônia
An endless sea of ancient trees, mysterious rivers and an overwhelming diversity of life - the Amazon rainforest is one of the last great wildernesses on earth. The concert experience "Amazônia", which celebrates the breathtaking beauty of the rainforest, unfolds in this fascinating, unique and impressive landscape: The spectacular Amazon images of the internationally acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado, who died in 2025, shine on a large screen, while the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra brings the images to life.
At the center of the evening is Heitor Villa-Lobos' monumental composition "Floresta do Amazonas", a musical portrait of the rainforest. Salgado selected his photographs in such a way that they enter into an intensive dialog with the musical motifs: "A perfect combination, almost as if Villa-Lobos' music had been written for these photos by Salgado," says the Italian-Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes, who conceived the project together with Salgado.
The program is complemented by an excerpt from "Aguas da Amazonia", with which Philip Glass took a poetic look at the watercourses of the Amazon. "Amazônia" unites the perspectives of great artists on the rainforest - and gives the audience a completely new, more intense view of it.
