SHAKESPEARE! Musical Adaptations from His Time and Ours

Shakespeare’s plays are by no means unmusical works—numerous songs are woven into the plots. These songs were not recited back then, but sung! The Canadian Ross W. Duffin compiled the melodies from Shakespeare’s time into a songbook.

The Württemberg Chamber Choir will bring these melodies to life together with Ricarda Hornych on the lute. Under the direction of Lukas Grimm, the historical songs will be juxtaposed with contemporary settings, featuring passages not only from the plays but also from the famous sonnets. The compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Martin, Nils Lindberg, Huw Watkins, John Tavener, Owain Park, and others offer a wide range of styles that, like Shakespeare’s texts, reflect the full spectrum of human existence.
