HANSEL & GRETEL

The Roman Arcangelo Corelli is the "classic" of the baroque concerto grosso. Just how exemplary he was can be seen from the fact that his only "Christmas Concerto" (in which he has the strings imitate shepherd instruments) was imitated by colleagues such as Locatelli, Manfredini, Vivaldi and Torelli. With the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, you will hear the original, framed by Christmas trumpet sounds!

The story of the two fairy tale characters Hansel and Gretel was first written down by Wilhelm Grimm in 1810. Since then, the German children's and household tale has been varied, parodied and dramatized countless times. The composer Engelbert Humperdinck was already composing as a child and studied in Cologne and Munich. As a prizewinner, he traveled to Italy, where he met Richard Wagner, who invited him to Bayreuth as his assistant. After Wagner's death, Humperdinck needed a few years to free himself from his strong influence and find himself. In 1890, his sister Adelheid asked him to write the music to songs for a fairytale play she had written for children. He gradually reworked this popular original version into the opera we know today. Irmi Wette, director of the Konstanzer Puppenbühne, is the great-granddaughter of Humperdinck's sister Adelheid and combines her texts with music from the opera.
