DER ROSENKAVALIER
Silent film from 1926 with the original film music by RICHARD STRAUSS
Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Frank Strobel
SOPHIE & OCTAVIAN
The director and screenwriter Robert Wiene is best known today for the classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1919). In 1925, he made the lavish film adaptation of the opera "Der Rosenkavalier" by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal - as a silent film! The roles were played by well-known Austrian and German actors alongside the French actress Huguette Duflos and thousands of extras. The film was shot in Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace, in Vienna and Lower Austria.
The film music was an instrumental arrangement of Strauss' opera score along with parts from his "Couperin Suite". Strauss insisted on conducting the premiere of the film himself in January 1926 at the Semperoper in Dresden. However, the planned tour of the USA with the film and Richard Strauss fell through because the first sound films were already being released there. And so the film and its music only became known as a historical treasure after a restored version was performed in 2006 at the Dresden Semperoper under the direction of Frank Strobel.
