An overview of Tobias Mayer's academic achievements Lecture by Prof. Dr. Armin Hüttermann, former University of Education Ludwigsburg

A catastrophic shipwreck in 1707 led to the British Parliament offering a prize for determining longitude "at sea". The self-taught Tobias Mayer (1723-1762), who was born in Marbach and grew up in Esslingen, had studied cartography, mathematics, instrument making and astronomy in detail and solved the problem astronomically and mathematically. The lecture provides an overview of his scientific achievements.
