Order reigns in a wooden dollhouse: Every day, everyday objects perform the same ritual task of dyeing a red thread. But the harmony is shattered when a tube of dye is vandalized in a secret room. While the victim desperately tries to name the danger, the community remains in denial.
Mara Jawetz’s wordless object theater addresses sexual violence and post-traumatic stress. Through contact microphones, the objects’ movements are amplified into a surreal soundscape that mirrors the characters’ inner states. Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s “banality of evil,” the piece examines the shared responsibility of a community that enables systematic violence by looking the other way.
