It is said that Dvořák sometimes paused in a conversation to whistle some of the melodies that kept coming to him. He just has to pluck them out of the air, so to speak. He put the velvety melodiousness of the string serenade down on paper in 12 May days in 1875. Despite all his self-doubt, Mendelssohn also belongs to the category of high-flyers. Between the ages of 12 and 14, he composed 12 string symphonies of dizzying variety, including the two movements of No. 10 in B minor. When France named the self-taught Jean Marie Leclair the "French Corelli", he already had a career as a dancer behind him, as is clearly evident in the Violin Concerto No. 2 op. 7.
