On May 13, 2024, riots broke out in the French overseas territory after the French government tried to push through a change in electoral law without consulting the local population. The clashes left 14 people dead. The country is on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. Its decolonization process has stalled since the controversial referendum in 2021. The country, which is characterized by social inequalities, is facing an uncertain future.
