Prof. Dr. Jörn Birkmann, Head of the Institute for Spatial Planning at the University of Stuttgart, was a lead author on the IPCC's Fifth and Sixth Assessment Reports. He also provided scientific support for the reconstruction of the Ahr valley after the flood disaster.

Climate change and urbanization are two megatrends that are changing our living and environmental conditions. Climate change will lead to more frequent and more intense heat waves and heavy rainfall events. The Ahr valley flood disaster and the heat in cities such as Stuttgart in summer require strategic adaptation. In addition to early warning systems, approaches to strengthen resilience must be further developed and implemented. In addition to physical changes, the vulnerabilities and dynamics of exposure must also be taken into account.
