Volksfeinde

The residents of a small town hope to attract many visitors with their spa. However, when the spa’s doctor discovers that the water is contaminated, the question arises—not only for Mayor Pia Stockmann (the sister of Dr. Thomas Stockmann)—as to what this means for the town’s economy. Ultimately, with the exception of the doctor, almost everyone is unwilling to give up the profits the spa promises. One of the doctor’s daughters and her friend, an environmental activist, also want to take action against environmental scandals like this one, though they don’t always agree on the best way to do so. The frustrated doctor ultimately questions democracy, and his daughter’s friend also believes that democratic processes may be too slow to avert the looming environmental crises. In the end, the doctor’s intransigence and the environmental activist’s uncompromising stance are countered by the hope that important changes can also be achieved through other—democratic—means.
