Workshop with Günter Riederer (Stuttgart City Archive)

Stuttgart 1841: Inhabitants of the poorhouse want to emigrate from Württemberg. The colony of Demerara in British Guiana on the Atlantic coast of South America promised a new life. A merchant arranges the crossing. Sources have been preserved in the Stuttgart city archives that can be used to describe this piece of local social history in more detail. The background is the connection between mass poverty and emigration on the eve of the Industrial Revolution. Together with Günter Riederer (research assistant at the Stuttgart City Archive), the participants will become active themselves and carry out a source exercise. Typical archival working methods such as finding meaningful sources, reading old manuscripts and searching for secondary literature will be presented.
