Was zählt ein Mensch?

Location:
Literaturhaus Stuttgart, Breitscheidstr. 4, 70174 Stuttgart

Reading and Discussion with Carolin Emcke, Moderated by René Aguigah
What does radical humanism mean? Are there limits to empathy for others? What obligations does the memory of history impose on us? Are there limits to the duty to speak out in the name of human rights? Or should nothing prevent us from perceiving others as part of the universal “we”? Carolin Emcke was already asking herself these questions before October 7 and the events in Gaza—but since then, they have become even more urgent. Ultimately, it comes down to the existential question: What is a human being worth? Carolin Emcke has been traveling to Israel-Palestine for over 20 years. She was most recently there to speak with people from Bee’ri or Jenin, from Tel Aviv or Ramallah—and to shed light on the blind spots of empathy in the discourse here at home. Carolin Emcke, born in 1967, lives in Berlin. In 2016, she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Her most recent book, *Gegen den Hass* (Against Hate), was published by S. Fischer.
