Weite Himmel und Klingende Tiefe – Siblieus „Finlandia“, Koussevitzsky Kontrabass Konzert, Arensky Sinfonie Nr. 1

The double bass takes center stage at this year’s fall concert presented by the Stuttgarter Musikfreunde orchestra. Under the direction of Klaus Kulling, the program features Jean Sibelius’s *Finlandia*, Serge Koussevitzky’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, and Anton Arensky’s Symphony No. 1. The soloist will be Stuttgart-based double bassist Marcos Álvarez.

The Stuttgarter Musikfreunde e. V. (OSM) is a multigenerational amateur orchestra with members from the greater Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg areas. Founded 75 years ago, the orchestra rehearses in Stuttgart-Vaihingen and typically prepares two concert programs per year.

Following the successful 75th-anniversary concert in May 2026 at the Mozartsaal of the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, the Orchester Stuttgarter Musikfreunde will present its fall concert on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bürgerhaus Stuttgart-Möhringen.

Marcos Álvarez grew up in Santander, Spain. From a young age, he played in numerous youth orchestras, including EGO, the Basque Country Youth Orchestra. He studied at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts (HMDK) and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Lübeck University of Music (MHL) under Professor Sophie Lücke.

In addition to classical music, he is passionate about jazz and numerous other musical genres. He has collaborated with the SWR Orchestra Stuttgart and the Reutlingen Philharmonic, among others.

Klaus Kulling has led the Orchester Stuttgarter Musikfreunde e. V. since 2011 and has developed the orchestra into a distinguished symphony orchestra with nearly 50 permanent members.

Since 1995, he has worked full-time as a teacher of violin, chamber music, and orchestral training at the Korntal-Münchingen Music School.

His repertoire ranges from classical symphonic concerts to musical theater and film music.
