The word “hieroglyphs” translates roughly as “sacred engravings/carvings”—that is, something imprinted on a material to create an image. What makes hieroglyphs so fascinating is that they belong to a writing system that remains foreign to us. This is also because hieroglyphs depict things from which we think we can infer a specific meaning, even though we know that’s not quite how they work. In this “in-between/thing,” we—as modern-day archaeologists—roam through the city, discovering signs that inscribe themselves in our consciousness every day, whether consciously or without our realizing it.
