Vaihingen an der Enz

Visitors to Vaihingen an der Enz are greeted from afar by Kaltenstein Castle, which towers over the town. Vaihingen lies between the Enz Valley and the Stromberg hill, only 30 kilometres from Stuttgart, and can be easily reached via the B10 trunk road, or in 15 minutes by train. The most photographed motif in the town is the "Vaihinger Dreiklang" – the unique triad consisting of the town hall, Kaltenstein Castle and the Protestant parish church –, all of which are visible from the marketplace. Typical of both Vaihingen's medieval town centre and its outlying districts are their picturesque, half-timbered buildings; the oldest in the town, dating from the 12th century, are to be found in Mühlstraße.

Remnants of the former city wall are easily recognisable – and in some parts even walkable. Two corner towers of the town fortifications, the mighty Pulverturm (Powder Tower) and the six-storey-high Haspelturm (Winch Tower), once served as a prison, among other things. They can be viewed during guided tours of the town.
