Akademiegarten beim Neuen Schloss Stuttgart

This Way

in 578 Meter Start Route

The Hohe Carlsschule, a military academy and later university founded by Duke Carl Eugen, was once located on the site of today's Akademiegarten behind the New Palace.

Its most famous student was certainly the poet Friedrich Schiller, who wrote his first verses here despite a ducal ban. The Lion Fountain, created by Nicolas von Thouret for King Friedrich von Württemberg, stands in the middle of the grounds.

Frederick was the first king of Württemberg. He came to the throne by Napoleon's grace in 1806. He was certainly the tallest king in Europe. Standing over 2 meters tall and weighing around 250 kilograms, he had a spectacular figure. Napoleon is said to have expressed his astonishment "at the elasticity of human skin" when he saw him for the first time.

The war-damaged buildings were demolished decades ago. A small model reminds us of the famous school.
The Academy Garden is part of the Upper Palace Garden and the Green U.
