Play in English
The American Drama Group Europe is once again presenting Charles Dickens’ famous Christmas tale in English this year, in which the old miser Ebenezer Scrooge is transformed into a kind-hearted man on Christmas Eve.
Unmoved by any Christmas spirit, Scrooge sits in his office on Christmas Eve. He behaves in a petty and spiteful manner toward his poor clerk, Bob Cratchit. He also declines his nephew Pred’s well-intentioned invitation to a Christmas dinner and chases away a few petitioners who are trying to collect donations for charity. Later, he is visited by the ghost of Marley, his deceased former business partner, and by the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future. They show him the happiness he has missed out on due to his greed and selfishness. But they also make clear to him the loneliness in which he will one day die if he does not mend his ways first. Before his eyes appear scenes from his childhood, as well as the Christmas celebrations at his nephew’s home and that of his employee. Deeply moved by these visions, he transforms from a heartless egoist into a paragon of generosity; the spiteful old man becomes a favorite among adults and children alike.
