From November 27, 2025 to January 30, 2026, the Stuttgart Main State Archives will be showing an exhibition on the history of Italian guest workers in Baden-Württemberg. Public guided tours take place every Wednesday at 11:00 am.
On December 20, 1955, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Italian Republic signed an agreement in Rome on the recruitment and placement of Italian workers. This German-Italian recruitment agreement laid the foundations for a labor migration without which the economic upswing of the post-war period would have been difficult to imagine. Since then, four million Italians have come to Germany. One of their main destinations was Baden-Württemberg. Hundreds of thousands stayed and enriched our country in the long term.
To mark the 70th anniversary, the Stuttgart Main State Archive is dedicating an exhibition to the Italians who made their way to Baden-Württemberg from the 1950s to the 1970s. Film and audio material, photographs, documents and objects, which mainly come from the holdings of the Main State Archives, illustrate the history of the Italian guest workers.
