Historical symposium as part of the Jewish Culture Weeks Stuttgart

The re-establishment of the Jewish community in Stuttgart 80 years ago is the reason for this year's motto for the entire series of events "In the midst of it all - 80 years of Jewish life in Stuttgart". Based on this, the historical symposium will not stop at Stuttgart and the period after 1945, but will focus on various aspects of the development of the Jewish community in Germany up to the present day.
Shortly after the end of the war, Jewish people in several cities, including Stuttgart, came together with the aim of rebuilding a Jewish community. The first Jewish service was held in Stuttgart on June 2, 1945. In the years that followed, Germany repeatedly became a destination for Jewish immigrants from countries where they felt threatened. However, in contrast to Israel and the USA, only a few thousand Jews immigrated until the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Since the 1980s, the Jewish community in the Federal Republic, represented by the Central Council of Jews in Germany, has increasingly presented itself to the public with its own initiatives and demands. There was also a growing interest in Jewish issues and the fate of Jews. In addition to the interest in the time of extermination, there was also an interest in the rich Jewish history and the remnants of Jewish life in the present. New Jewish museums were founded and new university institutions were set up to research and teach Jewish history and culture.
Nevertheless, the Jewish community remained small and became increasingly outdated. The decisive change came with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of the Soviet Union. Since then, a number of Jewish emigrants from the CIS states have come to Germany. Within just a few years, the Jewish community has quadrupled in size and continues to grow.
