Whether Baroque, Classical, or jazz— Canadian Brass has been delighting audiences for over 50 years with technical brilliance, humor, and infectious enthusiasm. The five outstanding brass players combine virtuosity with lively arrangements, surprising effects, and charming interludes that amaze international audiences.
With their “Happy New Year” program, they welcome the year 2027 and present specially arranged works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georges Bizet, Johann Strauss, Leonard Cohen (“Hallelujah”), and the Beatles. The ensemble was founded in 1970 by Chuck Daellenbach and Gene Watts, who demonstrated early on just how versatile a brass quintet can sound. One of their trademarks is their white sneakers, which originated from their work with the National Ballet of Canada: To refine their stage presence, they invited a dancer to rehearsals, who advised them to wear ballet shoes. This was intended to help them develop a better sense of rhythm, posture, and musical expression—and from there evolved the comfortable sneakers that are now inextricably linked to the ensemble.
