Cía. José Manuel Álvarez: *Captura y Fuga* is a contemporary flamenco dance performance by Spanish dancer and choreographer José Manuel Álvarez. The work is a tribute to the late flamenco photographer René Robert. It is an attempt to capture magical moments, knowing full well that they will inevitably slip away from us nonetheless. This was the focus of the passionate flamenco photographer René Robert, who died four years ago on a street in Barcelona and whose work José Manuel Álvarez now commemorates through dance. Robert’s voice is heard off-stage, while Álvarez, as the solo dancer, revives the flamenco of greats such as Antonio Gades, María Pagés, Israel Galván, and Eva Yerbabuena amid ghostly projections of Robert’s images. Álvarez, who has also choreographed for the Spanish singer Rosalía, among others, has been working with flamenco for 20 years. Now he brings to light the gestures frozen in Roberts’ photographs, transforming them into movement to reveal what might have been happening in the moments captured by the photographer.
