In a Ukrainian village just before Christmas. The Devil, seeking revenge on the blacksmith Wakula, decides to make the moon disappear and plunge the village into fear and confusion. The beautiful Oxana, with whom Wakula is in love, demands a pair of shoes as a token of his love—shoes as magnificent as those worn only by the Tsarina. The blacksmith feels compelled to make a pact with the devil in order to win her heart.
