"Lieber Gott mach mich fromm/weil ich aus der Hölle komm" is the title of a scene in Heiner Müller's atrocity tale Leben Gundlings Friedrich von Preußen. But it could just as well be from the Flying Dutchman, who in Wagner's early opera was condemned by Satan himself to cruise restlessly on the world's oceans. Every seven years he is allowed ashore to free a woman who will remain faithful to him until death. From the hell of eternal return, his path leads him into the icy waters of selfish calculation, where a man is only worth as much as he earns. The title role in Calixto Bieito's gloomy Wagner exegesis is performed by Derek Welton, an internationally acclaimed bass-baritone from Australia. Nicholas Carter conducts the Stuttgart State Orchestra in his third production of the season.
