Mrs. Cheveley knows that Sir Robert Chiltern owes his financial success to a betrayal of office. With this knowledge, she now tries to persuade the London MP to politically support a sensitive project. The blackmail forces Chiltern to choose between public ruin or breaking his marriage and his principles - a decision he tries to avoid by any means necessary.
