John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock THE 39 STEPS Crime Comedy
Stage adaptation by Patrick Barlow
Suspense meets fun! In this fast-paced crime comedy, four actors take on over a hundred roles.
Richard Hannay is wrongfully implicated in a murder. He flees headlong on an adventurous journey from London to the Scottish Highlands to uncover the “39 Steps” spy ring. In doing so, he hopes to prove his innocence and serve his country at the same time.
Alfred Hitchcock’s famous 1935 film *The 39 Steps* is transformed into a whirlwind theatrical delight. Not a single one of the film’s legendary scenes is left out—neither the ride on the “Flying Scotsman” nor the escape across the Forth Bridge, nor the famous handcuff scene and the finale at London’s Palladium Theater.
With subtle irony and a great love of intelligent nonsense, this spy thriller is transformed into a fast-paced theatrical comedy. Lightning-fast changes of setting and characters require perfect timing and ensure that the audience can’t stop marveling and laughing. Alfred Hitchcock meets Monty Python!
The production is directed by Catja Baumann, who was awarded the Audience Choice Award for her loving homage to Loriot. The lead role of Richard Hannay is played by audience favorite Jörg Pauly. At his side, Diana Gantner, Gideon Rapp, and Christian Werner showcase their remarkable versatility in countless roles.
