The Songs of the Daylark
Marie Luise Knott
Moderator: Matthias Bormuth
Marie Luise Knott, an expert on Hannah Arendt, essayist, and translator, has been exploring the world of poetry for years. Her essays navigate the thicket of poetic thought and linguistic currents, spurred by concrete questions, sudden moments of wonder, and political and personal upheavals. Alongside Christian Morgenstern, her “Songs of the Dayingale” are passionate pleas for the creative power of language—a way of thinking that Hannah Arendt held in high regard. Together with Matthias Bormuth, professor of the history of ideas and curator of the series, she will present some of her poetry columns within the context of Arendt’s poetic thinking and recount how she discovered the Canadian Nobellaureate Anne Carson and became her translator at the Matthes und Seitz publishing house. In 2022, she was awarded the Tractatus Essay Prize for Marie Luise Knotts’s Arendt book “370 Riverside Drive – 730 Riverside Drive.” In 2024, she received the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize for Essays from the German Academy for Language and Literature.
