Amanda Wingfield is a down-on-her-luck woman living in poverty with her grown-up daughter Laura and her son Tom under one roof. When Tom spontaneously invites his work colleague Jim to dinner, Amanda hopes to change her dreary life situation and does everything she can to set Laura up with Jim. Tennessee Williams interrogates the promise of the American Dream with great symbolic power.
