Lecture by Prof. Dr. Robert Krtezschmar with book presentation at the Stuttgart Main State Archives
On June 27, 1737, the Tübingen court lawyer Michael Andreas Moegling was appointed Joseph Süß Oppenheimer's public defender. As can be seen from the sources, the criminal trial, which had already been initiated, was designed from the outset with the death sentence carried out on February 4, 1738 in mind. The defense was intended to help give the judicial murder the appearance of legality. Moegling's document is edited for the first time in the publication presented here, which was published by the Commission for Historical Regional Studies, with a detailed introduction. After its presentation by its chairwoman Prof. Dr. Sabine Holtz, the editor Robert Kretzschmar discusses the historical context, the public defender, the legal framework, the creation of the document and Moegling's argumentation in order to assess the perception of the defence.
