Yellow Monsters
Host: Mareike Köhler
At “zwischen/miete,” shared apartments in Stuttgart become a reading stage for one evening. In December, Clara Leinemann will be our guest with her debut novel “Yellow Monsters”: Charlie, a math major, is sitting in the subway with a black eye. Just a moment ago, she was Googling “bad person”; now she’s on her way to an anti-aggression workshop for women. Only if she attends will she be allowed to continue living with her best friend, Ella. She can’t go back to her own apartment. But Charlie wants nothing to do with the “hardened criminals” she expects to encounter in the group. Is it really her fault that her ex-boyfriend Valentin drove her to the brink of rage time and time again? Clara Leinemann tells the story of a relationship that seems perfect—until it isn’t anymore. Of traditional ideals of love, female violence, and emotional dependence. Clara Leinemann, born in Cologne in 1994, was awarded the 2026 lit.COLOGNE Debut Prize for her debut novel. She lives in Berlin.
