Herman van Veen, born on March 14, 1945, grew up in Utrecht and attended the music conservatory after finishing school. In 1965, he made his theater debut with the solo show “Harlekijn.” Since then, he has traveled around the world with his performances. He has released about 180 CDs, just as many books, and two dozen plays, and has also enjoyed success as a painter for over 10 years.
He has received various awards for his artistic and humanitarian work. In 1990, he received the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, and in 1991, the Golden Camera for *Alfred Jodocus Kwak*. In 1993, he was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau and the Order of the Dutch Lion. In 1999, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his contribution to German-Dutch understanding. In 2005, he was honored with the Martin Buber Medal, and in 2012, with the Münchhausen Prize. He received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels and the Planetary Consciousness Award from the Club of Budapest. In France, he was awarded the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros de Littérature Musicale. In 2020, he received the Joachim Ringelnatz Prize in Cuxhaven. Herman van Veen is the father of four children, the grandfather of three grandchildren, and the stepfather of the orphaned duck Alfred Jodocus Kwak.
Following the great success of his “Achtzig” tour—featuring 60 concerts in German and six sold-out open-air concerts in 2026—Herman van Veen will return to the stage in 2027 and 2028 to continue his concert tour.
