Luise loves Ferdinand, Ferdinand loves Luise. He is a major and the son of a powerful president, she is the daughter of a musician. What begins as a radical assertion of feeling becomes a conflict with a society in which class and social class boundaries are considered God-given. Passion makes Ferdinand blind and fanatical, absolute morality makes Luise susceptible to blackmail. Thus, Kabale und Liebe is a political drama and love tragedy in one.
