To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, the focus is on Piano Sonata Op. 110: a work in which Beethoven takes up Bach’s contrapuntal art at the highest level and transforms it into a deeply personal musical language. His study of The Well-Tempered Clavier and his admiration for Bach’s “ocean” of musical depth particularly shape the fugal finale of this sonata, which forms a unique whole out of lament, new beginnings, and renewal. Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, saw Beethoven as the supreme standard. He studied Beethoven’s works intensively and at the same time felt pressured by this legacy—“the footsteps of a giant” breathing down his neck. The relationship between Clara Schumann and Brahms, on the other hand, was marked by a deep emotional and artistic bond—a lifelong friendship sustained by trust, admiration, and mutual inspiration.
