The "little" man is Pinneberg, who, together with his wife Emma, tries with all his might and yet in vain to lead a middle-class life. Fallada describes the daily struggle for survival from hand to mouth and the worries in the face of changing times, changing values, brutalization and populism - parallels between the Weimar period and our own come to mind, and the eponymous question arises once again.
