There are songs and bands that become deeply ingrained in a society’s pop-cultural and musical memory, and whose influence extends far beyond the moment. For example, the band Kraftwerk not only created milestones in popular music in Germany but also influenced countless other bands worldwide. In Ukraine, the band Okean Elzy not only represents indie rock that has captivated the masses, but has also become an audible symbol of independence. Much the same can be said about the rock band Republika, which provided the soundtrack for the underground in Poland in the 1980s and 90s.
With the “Schlüssel auf Reisen” project, the songs of these and other bands are brought back to life. And not only that. They are being brought to life anew. For they have been specially arranged for choir and band by the Czech composer Marek Doubrava. It is not just any choir, but one consisting of 50 students from Stuttgart and Brno. Since spring, the young people have been rehearsing the songs separately in the two cities; in the summer, they will come together in Raci Udoli on the Czech-Polish border and grow into a community. A community you can hear. They will be accompanied by members of the groups Kafka Band, Letni kapela, and Tata Bojs, which include some of the Czech Republic’s best-known musicians.
“Schlüssel auf Reisen” is a project that brings people together, where four languages, four pop cultures, and songs from four countries converge into a meeting place that also symbolizes Stuttgart’s city partnerships with Brno (CZ), Łódź (PL), and Khmelnytskyi (UA).
The evening is part of the 25th anniversary program of the Literaturhaus Stuttgart.
