Männlich!? Ein Liederabend der besonderen Art
Duration
120 minutes
What makes a man a man? Prof. Götz Payer’s lieder class (HMDK Stuttgart) explores this question in an extraordinary lieder recital that combines music with social issues.
Taking Herbert Grönemeyer’s famous line “When is a man a man?” as their starting point, the students explore the various facets of masculinity through music. Navigating themes of seduction, dominance, vulnerability, self-doubt, and humor, they challenge traditional gender roles and demonstrate just how diverse and fluid notions of manhood can be.
With powerful voices, emotional song interpretations, and a fresh take on the classical song repertoire, the result is a concert evening that uniquely combines musical enjoyment with social reflection.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Moving works exploring masculinity and gender roles
- Emotional interpretations bridging tradition and the present
- New perspectives on societal expectations of men
- Classical art songs in a modern, contemporary context
As part of the special exhibition “Ornament & Symbol: What Adorns Men,” this recital complements the exhibition’s cultural-historical themes by offering a musical perspective on identity, gender roles, and the evolution of masculinity.
