MARKUS LANZ LIVE
GREENLAND—MY JOURNEYS TO THE END OF THE WORLD

By and starring Markus Lanz

He usually interviews people with interesting stories. But for nearly 20 years, Markus Lanz has regularly traded the TV studio for one of the most extreme and fascinating regions in the world: Greenland. A region that is currently also increasingly coming into the political spotlight. With an elaborately produced multivision show, he presents his experiences and adventures on stage.

“I’m always lugging around an incredible amount of gear, including two cameras and more than half a dozen lenses. The telephoto lens alone weighs five kilos, and I’ve often wondered why I actually put myself through this. But then, in this almost unreal winter light, a polar bear suddenly appears, and all the hardship is forgotten,” says Lanz.

For National Geographic, he compiled a book from about 20,000 photos, which became a bestseller. The ZDF documentary “Longing for Greenland” was watched by nearly four million television viewers. In an elaborately produced multivision show, Markus Lanz is now presenting his photos and film footage live on stage for the first time, sharing his experiences and adventures with the audience.
“We can learn a lot from the last Arctic hunters,” says Lanz, “and I was particularly impressed by their incredible ability to concentrate. Anyone who can crouch completely motionless for five hours at minus 30 degrees at a seal den must possess abilities that we lost long ago.”

Markus Lanz, who grew up in the Dolomites, did not shy away from the hardships that such expeditions entail. Time and again, he visited the hunters of Siorapaluk, the world’s northernmost village, and traveled with them and their dog sleds for days across the frozen sea to hunt. In February, he spent the night in bivouacs at temperatures around minus 40 degrees, endured life-threatening snowstorms, and marveled at the aurora borealis. Time and again, he captured the magnificent scenery in photographs: people going about their ancient work, icebergs bathed in almost surreal light, but also children swimming in water that was eight degrees cold, hunters and their mysterious bond with their dogs, and fishermen in their tiny boats, threatened by massive icebergs.

There are probably few people who have experienced, photographed, and filmed Greenland in such a pristine way as Markus Lanz—a world that likely won’t exist much longer. Join him for a special evening and immerse yourself in a rugged world, full of beauty, but also hardship and deprivation.

Markus Lanz presents this top-class lecture on the fascinating nature and people of Greenland for the first time at TRAUM & ABENTEUER!
