A play in French by Molière
Le Théâtre du Héron
“May the plague strike avarice and the avaricious!” Yet it is Harpagon himself, of all people, who is struck by this very curse: money is his greatest passion. He jealously guards his treasure and even subordinates his children’s happiness to his own pursuit of profit. With plenty of energy and wit, the TNT Theater brings Molière’s classic comedy about greed and human weaknesses to the stage.
Harpagon wants to marry off his daughter Élise for purely financial reasons. But Élise wants to forge her own path to happiness in love, and Harpagon’s son Cléante even intends to thwart his own father’s marriage plans. Secret romances, intrigues, and mix-ups drive the plot forward until a missing money chest plunges everything into chaos. Amid miserly obsession and the courage of youthful love, a comedy unfolds that remains astonishingly relevant to this day: How much is money really worth to us, and what are we willing to sacrifice for it?
